Preferred Pesticides for Bed Bug Treatment

FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER: @JWhiteBBTV – – In this episode Jeff will discuss the pesticides that he and BedBug Central are using in their bed bug treatment protocols. Please keep in mind that it is not his intention to sell anyone on a specific pesticide. There are many pesticides available that may have similar effects to the examples mentioned in this video and a company not using these pesticides does not mean they have chosen poorly. Also, most of the products mentioned in this video are intended to be used by pest control professionals. If a non-licensed individual decided to purchase any of the examples mentioned and apply them on their own, please follow all label directions carefully and review any laws that are specific to your individual state. For a liquid residual we are currently alternating service to service Transport GHP and Demand CS in an effort to optimize the effect of these products while trying to manage and resistance concerns. For dusts, we use Tri-Die and Diatomaceous Earth. Please watch the video for more information on why we chose each product and any concerns we have with each.

Verifi™ Bed Bug Detector for Homeowners, Renters and Non-Pest Control Professionals

@JWhiteBBTV – – In this video, Jeff will describe how the Verifi™ Bed Bug Detector by FMC works and what to consider when hiring someone to install it in your home or office. The first thing to know is that Verifi is only available to pest control industry professionals and any homeowner or renter watching this video should contact your local pest control professional to ask more about the Verifi™ Bed Bug Detector. The Verifi uses both CO2 and a chemical lure to attract bed bugs to it. The CO2 booster lasts 24 hours once activated and the lure will last 90 days after installed. This device can be used to confirm a problem exists, verify a problem has been eliminated or be used as a proactive monitor to detect bed bugs early on. The intervals with which Verifi should be inspected and rate at which the booster and lure are going to be replaced are discussions to be had with your local pest control provider. Research has indicated that bed bugs are activated about 5 feet from where the Verifi has been set. This 5 foot radius should be a starting point when designing where Verifi will be set and sleeping areas should be considered as focal points for monitoring. If you are a pest control industry professional and want to learn more about setting Verifi™ for the detection of bed bugs please watch this video which is better suited for that application:

Learn how to find a good exterminator for bed bugs in this Howcast pest control video with expert Jeff White.

My name is Jeff White and I’m the research entomologist for Bed Bug Central and the host of Bed Bug TV, I have no idea how I got into bugs and bed bugs — and here I am, six years later, and having a lot of fun working with bed bugs and I’ll be talking to you about pest control. Oh no, you might have found bed bugs in your home, and so the first thing you’re gonna want to do is look in the phone book, or do some research and find a good quality pest control professional in your area. But, what is a good quality pest control professional? What are you looking for when you hire a company? All very important questions, and so let’s go over a few things that you need to know: Obviously, from a business perspective, outside of bed bugs, you want to look for companies that are part of the Better Business Bureau, or part of an organization in the pest control industry we have called Quality Pro. And there’s a lot of other organizations out there that approve a business as a good, ethical business. Also, from the pest control industry’s perspective, you want to look for a company that’s part of the NPMA (National Pest Management Association). And that shows that a company is getting education, staying up with the times, and hopefully a good, progressive company, outside of bed bugs. And those are all good first steps. But, what about the actual bed bug protocol? What I can tell you, from all my experience, is that bed bugs are not very easy to control, even for professionals, and so you want to ask a few questions about what they’re doing to control bed bugs. A lot of research is showing us that bed bugs can be resistant to a lot of the pesticides we have available to us, and so you want to look for a company that’s not just relying on pesticides… using bed encasements, interception devices, steamers to kill bugs on contact, and a lot of other different tools ,that aren’t pesticides, to help control bed bugs. That way, if a pest control company happens to encounter a bed bug-resistant strain in your home, they actually have a chance to get rid of it. And that’s why you’re looking for a good, progressive treatment that uses a lot of these different tools. Also, be aware that there are a lot of companies now that are using heat technology to heat up entire homes to above 120 degrees to kill bed bugs. And that’s another technology that you can look for that companies are using to kill bed bugs. You want to make sure they’re holding that critical temperature of 120 degrees or hotter for at least two hours and maybe up to 6 hours inside your home to kill bed bugs as effective as possible. That will allow time for that heat to penetrate all the different pieces of furniture inside your home. Those are just some very quick, simple things that you can look for in a pest control company to help you choose a good, knowledgeable pest control professional to help you deal with your bed bug infestation.
