Learn how a bed bug infestation happens in this Howcast pest control video with expert Jeff White.

My name is Jeff White and I’m the research entomologist for Bed Bug Central and the host of Bed Bug TV I have no idea how I got into bugs and bed bugs and here I am six years later and having a lot of fun working with bed bugs and I’ll be talking to you about pest control. People see stories on the news about bed bugs taking over the world in mass transit vehicles. You know in movie theaters and they immediately think oh my god I don’t want to bring bed bugs into my house and so one of the most important things that you need to know is how to avoid bringing bed bugs home with you. The first this is is that bed bugs have to be brought from one infestation into another place. They don’t just exist naturally say outdoors and so you don’t have to be scared say about walking down the street, taking your dog for a walk at the park and picking up a bed bug. People you know see stories and say oh my god you know what if they live outdoors can I take my dog for a walk and pick them up like ticks. That’s not how bed bugs work. And so somethings that you need to be aware of are that discarded furniture is something that you typically want to avoid. You know somebody might have thrown a couch out and it may have had bed bugs on it. 20 years you may not have thought anything of bringing a piece of furniture in off the street if you didn’t have a couch in your house, but that may now have bed bugs on it and so you want to avoid bringing in discarded furniture and if you absolutely have to you want to make sure you know how to do an inspection to see if it does in fact have bed bugs on it. If you’re going to purchase used furniture ask the company if their doing anything to address bed bugs because those furniture can have bed bugs on them and many companies now are starting to do things before they resell those items. Lastly if you’re going to travel you want to make sure you do a brief inspection of the room that you’re staying in, but more importantly know what to do with your belongings when you return home. A hot wash and/or hot dry cycle can kill all bugs on clothing. You also want to know what to do with your suitcase and so do some research. See what’s out there. See how to avoid bringing those bugs in and how to treat that suitcase properly. And those are some things that you need to be aware of if you’re concerned with bringing bed bugs into your home.

Bed Bugs – Tips from Truly Nolen Pest Control

Summer travel plans are in full swing! And with that in mind, it’s probably a good idea to be aware of those pesty critters called “bed bugs.”

Since 2009, it’s no secret there has been a flare-up with bed bug infestation, so protection is certainly an important word that comes to mind, along with awareness.

Here are some helpful tips on Bed Bugs from Truly Nolen Pest Control.

When my family and I travel, we like to bring back great photo memories and souvenirs. There is one annoying pest we don’t want to bring back and that is bed bugs. Here are a few helpful tips to keep you relaxed and worry free during your travels when it comes to bed bugs.

When checking into any hotel, I always like to take a look around. Think like a bed bug. They like to hide close to the bed for ready access to their food. Where do bed bugs like to hide? Key places are the headboard, mattress, box spring and the wall behind the head board and the night stand. I typically travel with a flashlight but a quick look around without one is still a good idea. You can even use a flashlight app on your smartphone.

Look for drops of blood, bed bugs on or in the seams of the mattress. Here is an example of an infestation. Nasty, eww, gross.

Like most hotels, this one is well maintained by the owners and clean.

When returning home, you want to make sure the house stays bed bug free. In some cases it is possible for bed bugs to transfer from one piece of luggage to another. As soon as you get home, unpack your suitcase in the garage. Wash all your clothes from the trip. A good detergent and a hot drying is a great way to kill of any straggling bed bugs.

It’s a good idea not to store your luggage in your bedroom closet between trips. Instead, store it in the garage if possible.

We here at Truly Nolen hope you find these tips helpful and enjoy a pest free life.

Bed Bug – Residential Bed Bug Preparation by Abell Pest Control

o Welcome to Abell’s Client preparation checklist for the control of bed bugs in your home.
o The following presentation will review the necessary steps required to make your upcoming Bed Bug treatment will be the most successful as possible.
o Before we begin, please take a moment to download the checklist version of this video at, while you’re on the web page please click on the link called CLIENT PREPARATION CHECKLIST FOR THE CONTROL OF BED BUGS.
o Let’s begin with some household items you’ll need for the preparation. A “flat Head” screwdriver, 5 to 10 garbage bags, a pen or pencil to mark off items from the checklist.
o Starting in the bedroom we’ll first remove any television sets from the wall units and unplug all electronic items, like clock radios and lamps.
o Remove all electrical wall plates, phone jack plates and light switch covers.
o For proper treatment, all these items should remain in the bedroom area.
o Make sure the laundry machine is empty of any previous wash before we start the laundering procedure.
o Remove all your bedding and pillows, and place them in the garbage bags.
o NOTE: Articles under the beds provide an ideal place for bedbugs to hide. All clothing or garments loose around the room must be bagged and laundered. All other objects that were previously stored under the bed should not be moved as bedbugs may be relocated into other areas of the structure.
o At this time, all clothing should now be in securely tied garbage bags and ready to be taken to the Laundry Room.
o Make sure to bring only one bag at a time to the laundry room and place the clothing directly into the washing machine, and not to load more than 50% of the machine’s capacity.
o It’s necessary that all garments be laundered in hot water. The temperature should reach over 60°C or 140°F.
o Or you may also use the dryer on the highest setting for a minimum of 30 minutes, reaching temperatures over 40°C or 104°F. The dryer must be capable of reaching a temperature of over 40°C to kill all stages.
o Make sure to immediately discard all empty garbage bags used to transport the clothing into an exterior garbage receptacle.
o Note: All laundered items must remain out of the treatment area during service. Clothing and fabrics associated with beds/sofas cannot be treated with pesticides due to the prolonged contact with skin. It is for this reason that this step is crucial and necessary to ensure the treatment program does not fail with the re-introduction of bedbugs from infested clothing.
o Let’s go back to the bedroom to vacuum the floor and rug extensively. Please make sure to remove the vacuum bag immediately and discard in an exterior garbage receptacle.
o Pry baseboards away from walls where possible or when instructed by the Abell Service Technician.
o During the service, it’s necessary for you and your pets to vacate the premises and to not re-enter until at least 4 hours after the treatment.
o Persons with underlying health conditions should consult their family physician where they have concerns regarding re-entry time.
o Fish aquariums may be left on site, however, they should be covered and air filters must be disconnected for the duration of the treatment.
o Thank you for watching our presentation today. If you do have any further questions regarding your upcoming bed bug treatment, please call us at 1-888-949-4949 or visit us at
o At Abell we’ve got you covered.
